Escritor de canciones estadounidense. El menor de 12 hermanos, fue musicalmente un autodidacto. Desde los 15 años viajó con bandas de bronces y de carnavales. Después de unos pocos años en los que trabajó como vendedor de canciones de Tin Pan Alley, empezó a contribuir con melodías para las comedias musicales de Broadway, entre ellas "You're My Everything y "I Found a Million Dollar Baby in a Five-and-Ten-Cent Store. En 1932 se trasladó a Hollywood, donde colaboró en filmes como Vampiresas (1933), La calle 42 (1933), Serenata argentina (1940) y Sun Valley Serenade (1941; con "Chattanooga Choo-Choo), y recibió premios de la Academia por las canciones "Lullaby of Broadway, "You'll Never Know y "On the Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe. Entre 1935 y 1950 compuso más canciones que ningún otro compositor, ubicadas en los primeros puestos de los ránkings.
